Srinagar: Four militants, a civilian and policeman were killed in a gunfight with the government forces in Srigufwara area in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Friday.
An official said that four militants trapped in a house were killed in the gunfight that lasted for several hours. He said the identities of the slain militants are being ascertained.
He said that the house owner Mohammad Yousuf Rather, his wife, a policeman and two army men were injured in the initial shooting.
However, Rather and the injured policeman, identified as Ashiq Hussain, succumbed. The wife of slain house owner, identified as Hafeeza was rushed to SKIMS Soura for specialized treatment.
Nearly twenty civilians were injured in the clashes that erupted soon after the gunfight began.
Reports said that youth took to streets and pelted the forces with stones to disrupt the operation. The forces, they said, responded by firing live ammunition, pellets and tear gas.
