Srinagar, June 20: The decision of the Bharatiya Janata Party to say goodbye to its alliance partner Peoples Democratic Party in Jammu and Kashmir without any prior notice has made it clear that who was running the state.
Decision of the BJP to pull the plug surprised the PDP and the party did not make any attempt to enter into negotiations with the saffron party. Mehbooba quickly forwarded her resignation to the Governor N N Vohra and called it a day. “It looks like the Mehbooba Mufti was ready. May be it came as a surprise to her but she did not react. But she sending her resignation in a jiffy said it all,” said an analyst.
He said, “Since the day PDP-BJP entered into an alliance the discomfort was visible as both parties had nothing in common. The end was inevitable but it would be so sudden was not expected.”
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who visited Jammu and Kashmir just 12-days ago, was reportedly unaware about the development and he was not taken into the loop.
During his Kashmir visit he had asked “right minded” people to come forward for talks. “Many people believe that Rajnath Singh was not taken into confidence as he had a soft corner towards PDP and wanted the BJP to carry on with the alliance in J&K,” said a source.
“BJP pulling out of the coalition is a victory for the hardliners within the saffron party as they wanted this coalition to break. The senior BJP leader Ram Madhav while announcing the breakup put the entire blame on the PDP and walked out. He blamed the PDP for deteriorating law and order situation in the Valley and stated that PDP ministers were not performing,” said a Kashmir watcher.
He said, “PDP has not been able to put a strong defence as it was caught napping. Till the last moment the PDP leaders and ministers were terming the reports about PDP planning to pull out as fake and fabricated.”
A politician said that soon after the BJP pulled out from the government the state president of the party Ravinder Raina announced that deliberations to part ways were on for the past three months. “It’s strange that PDP was unaware about it. The party leaders couldn’t even sniff that BJP was preparing the ground for the pullout. Now it hardly matters what PDP leaders say as its all over and they would have to once again go back to people as possibilities about government being formed look bleak.”
