Vegetable vendor injured in army firing in Anantnag, allege locals


Srinagar, June 19: A civilian was injured after army allegedly opened fire following a ‘gunshot’ like sound in Srigufwara area of Bijbehara in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Tuesday, even as police said that the man was shot at by unknown gunmen.
The injured identified as Javed Ahmad Waza, a vegetable vendor by profession sustained bullet injury in his back. He was shifted to the district hospital where from he was referred to SKIMS, Soura in a critical condition.
Locals quoting eyewitnesses said army’s 3 RR fired at Waza near the bus stand.
“The army mistook the sound of a tyre burst or a firecracker as gunshot and opened fire. One of the bullets hit Waza following which he fell down on the ground,” locals said.
Police, however, said that the vegetable vendor was shot at by the gunmen. “The man suffered injuries after being fired at by gunmen,” SSP Anantnag Altaf Ahmad Khan had said.
A case has been registered and further investigation has been initiated, he had said. (GNS)
