Srinagar, Jun 5: The train service between Srinagar and Banihal in Jammu region was on Tuesday suspended for security reasons while rail run from the summer capital to Baramulla in north Kashmir was running normally.
”All trains running on Srinagar-Banihal track via Pulwama, Anantnag and Qazigund have been suspended since 1300 hrs on Tuesday following protests by locals at Awantipora railway station,” a railway officer said.
The decision to suspend the train service was taken on the advice by local authorities and police in view of protests by locals, demanding body of one of the five militants killed in an encounter near the Line of Control (LoC) in Tangdhar sector in north Kashmir on May 25.
Scores of protestors hit the streets near Awantipora railway station in Pulwama and held demonstration, demanding the body of Mudasir Ahmad Bhat who was among five militants killed when security forces foiled infiltration bid from Pakistan administered Kashmir (PaK) at Eagle post in Tangdhar sector in the frontier district of Kupwara on May 25.
The demonstrators alleged that authorities were delaying handing over the body to the family members who have identified Mudasir.
However, train service between Srinagar-Budgam in the central Kashmir and Baramulla was running as per schedule, he added.
In the past, railway property had suffered massive damage during protests in the valley, where the train services remained suspended for about six months during summer unrest in 2016 and several dozens of times since then.
