Allow people to offer Friday prayers in peace

The Jammu and Kashmir Police should seriously consider the proposal of Hurriyat Conference (M) Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq not to deploy the forces around Jamia Masjid on Fridays and allow people to offer congregational prayers in peace.
The chaos and confusion which old city witnessed on last Friday has shocked everyone. Pellets and teargas shells fired by the forces landed inside the grand mosque. The devotees, including women and children, were shell shocked.
It has been established beyond doubt that deployment of forces around the Jamia Masjid on Fridays leads to confrontation making the situation tense.
The Director General of Police S P Vaid had said that Mirwaiz’s proposal could be considered to pave way for the peaceful Fridays in Jamia Masjid. Nowhata area has remained volatile and has been the epicentre of the clashes between the government forces and the youth. Authorities claim that forces are deployed around Jamia Masjid to maintain law and order and for the security of the devotees. If it’s so then why are devotees targeted every now and then. Firing pellets and teargas shells on the worshippers is not acceptable. This has to stop.
It’s the responsibility of the Jammu and Kashmir government to rein in the forces and pass on strict instructions to them to exercise restraint. If it’s not happening then the government should take a call and stop deploying forces around the grand mosque on Fridays. This is a serious issue and it needs to be taken a note of. Thousands of people from every nook and corner of Kashmir visit Jamia Masjid on Friday to offer congregational prayers and this practice has been at place for the ages.
