Old city loses sheen

Old city which was considered to be the business hub of Srinagar has lost its sheen due to the frequent restrictions and curbs which are imposed every now and then.
Traders, who could afford, have shifted their base from the old city. The businessmen who have no other option are fighting against all the odds to keep surviving.
People at the helm are of the opinion that whenever separatists call for a shutdown or give a chalo call they are left with no other option other than to impose curbs in the old city. For authorities imposing restrictions are a “precautionary measure.”
The areas where restrictions are imposed mostly include Nowhatta, M R Gunj, Safa Kadal, Khanyar and Rainawari. Even in normal days when no restrictions are imposed in other city areas, old city remains under siege. This has led to traders suffering huge losses.
Many people believe that old city is on the “hit list” due to it being volatile. Jamia Masjid and other adjoining areas which are considered to be bastion of Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq have been the worst hit. The Mirwaiz on many occasions has tried to rake up the issue about old city facing discrimination but the rulers have not paid much heed towards it.
Many people who have migrated from the old city are finding it hard to establish their businesses and ventures in other areas. They stand dislodged and disillusioned. The old city markets where people used to come from every part of the Valley have become haunted as people prefer to stay away.
