Symposium on Waste Management held at GVEI

Srinagar, May 15: A daylong symposium regarding Solid waste management was held at Green Valley Educational Institute Ellahi Bagh today wherein ways and means to tackle waste in order to make Srinagar City Green and clean were discussed and demonstrated.
Organized by Valley’s reputed Private company, GEMINI GROUP Pvt. Ltd; that works with Srinagar Municipal Corporation as its Information, Education and Communication (IEC) partner and supported and hosted by Green Valley Educational Institute, the symposium was attended by Officers of Srinagar Municipal Corporation, its field staff, and the staff and students of Green Valley Educational Institute. The daylong symposium was held in two sessions. In the first session Officers of Srinagar Municipal Corporation made the students aware about various forms of waste and the ways to treat different types of waste. The speakers told the gathering of students that the Government has vowed to make Srinagar a waste free city by March 2019 and appealed the youngsters to play their role in waste reduction as the future citizens of this City. Stress was made upon the importance of waste segregation and the different forms of treating the waste In order to save the environment from the dangers of piling waste and the health hazards associated with it. The field workers of the corporation made demonstrations about use of different colour coded bins for segregation of different waste forms.
During the second session an Intra School Poster competition was held. More than 100 students of the Green Valley Educational Institute participated in the competition. The theme of the poster competition was was “3 R” (REDUCE, REUSE and RECYCLE). It was heartening to see children drawing posters that called for waste management by the methods of Reducing, Reusing and Recycling. The competition was held under three age group categories viz Under 12, Under 15 and under 19. Six posters from the participanting students, two from each group, were selected as best posters by the expert committee headed by Veteran artist Naushad Gayoor.
