Article 35-A returns

The petitions challenging Article 35-A have once again been listed for hearing in the Supreme Court in August.
The speculations about Article 35-A may be scrapped by the Apex Court had triggered a row in Kashmir last year. This Article provides special property rights to people of Jammu and Kashmir and it’s directly linked with the Article 370.
Many people in Kashmir believe that if Article 35-A is scrapped it would pave the way for settlement of the outsiders in Jammu and Kashmir.
There is consensus in the Valley that this Article should not be scrapped but in Jammu region the opinion is divided.
The Bharatiya Janata Party has always been of the opinion that Article 370 should be revoked to pave the way for complete merger of Jammu and Kashmir into the union of India. The abrogation of Article 370 and Article 35-A have been the main election planks of the saffron party.
BJP leaders have said it on record that whenever BJP comes into power with full majority in J&K it would ensure that Article 370 is scrapped. When PDP and BJP entered into an alliance in Jammu and Kashmir in 2015 both the parties decided that they won’t rake up the controversial issues and would concentrate on the development.
BJP’s state unit has not made much noise about it during the past three years but the national leaders of the saffron party have been talking about scrapping Article 370 and it being an impediment in the development of Jammu and Kashmir.
As the 2019 Parliamentary elections are approaching there is every possibility about BJP once again raking up the issue of abrogating Article 370. There could be one more controversy in the offing.
