Supreme Court’s refusal to change the investigating agency in Kathua rape and murder case has come as a shot in the arm for the Jammu and Kashmir government.
Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti had remained firm on her stand and had refused to hand over the Kathua case to CBI for the probe. Despite Bharatiya Janata Party leaders and Ministers meeting the Chief Minister and asking her to handover the Kathua case to CBI she did not budge.
Since the day the rape and murder case of an eight year old Kathua nomad girl has come to fore lot of politics has been played over it. Two BJP ministers were sacked for participating in a protest held in favour of the accused.
Since the day Chaudary Lal Singh has been sacked he has been taking out protest marches and rallies in Jammu to seek CBI probe into the case. It has become clear that many BJP leaders are covertly supporting Hindu Ekta Manch, which is spearheading the protests in favour of the accused and to seek CBI probe into the case.
The Supreme Court’s ruling about not to change the investigating agency in the case has pushed the supporters of the accused on the back foot. Now they would have to look for some other ways and means to save the accused.
Even the BJP leaders who supported the accused are now slowly dragging their feet and are stating that the guilty should be punished. Supreme Court’s ruling has in fact helped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to score a point over its ally BJP and has come as a face saving measure for the PDP.
