Man drowns in Kupwara, family says he slipped into dam while performing ablution


Srinagar, May 9: A 50-year old man drowned in a dam at Turdus area of Kandi village in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Wednesday.
The family said that Mohammad Shaban Bhat, a resident of Turdus, Kandi drowned in a pond which is situated close to the forests area.
Ghulam Mohammad Bhat, brother of the deceased said that he was performing ablution for offering namaz and slipped into the pond as a result of which he drowned.
Soon after the news spread, scores of locals assembled at the spot while local army unit, teams of SDRF and police immediately started an operation to retrieve the body of the deceased, they said.
A police officer said the man’s body was later retrieved from the Pond.
He said that the investigations are underway to ascertain the cause of the death whether he slipped or there is some other reason.
A case under 174 CrPc has been registered to know the actual cause of the death, the officer said.
He said that after conducting all legal formalities, the body of the deceased was handed over to his family for last rites. (GNS)
