A tourist getting killed in a stone-pelting incident at Narbal on Srinagar-Gulmarg road has evoked widespread condemnation. Leaders have cut across the party lines and have expressed shame over the incident.
Kashmir has been known for its hospitality and treating its guest with full respect and honour.
Attack on tourists who were on way to Gulmarg could deal a big blow to the tourism industry as the Spring season had arrived with lot of promise and there were many bookings for the days to come.
People associated with the tourism sector have expressed dismay over the incident and have condemned it. Even the separatist leaders have cut across the ideologies and have termed the incident as shameful. They have made it clear that indiscipline cannot be tolerated and such incidents are bound to defame the Kashmiris.
Since Monday people associated with the tourism sector have kept their fingers crossed and are hoping that tourists won’t cancel their bookings and would throng Kashmir in coming summer season.
Just before the incident of Srinagar-Gulmarg road, a tourist bus was stoned near Aishmuqam in south Kashmir but luckily no loss of life was reported and tourists had escaped with injuries.
The people who really matter in Kashmir would have to come forward and make it clear that such incidents should not be repeated and tourists should not be targeted. If the trend of targeting tourists is not reversed people would stop visiting Kashmir and we can have one more season without tourists. End of tourism season early would mean losses in crores again. One hopes that better sense prevails and such incidents don’t get repeated in future.
