Srinagar: Three militants were killed in a gunfight with the government forces in Chattabal area of Srinagar, even as a civilian died after being run over allegedly by a forces’ vehicle during clashes in Safa Kadal.
A police spokesman said that the slain militants belonged to Lashkar-e-Toiba outfit. “On the basis of the materials recovered from the site, it is found that the militants belonged to outlawed LeT,” he said, adding incriminating material including heavy arms and ammunition were recovered from their possession.
The firefight broke out this morning after forces launched a search operation in Gasi mohalla following a tip-off about the presence of militants.
A CRPF officer was injured in the initial firing. He was shifted to a hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile, massive clashes erupted between youth and government forces at several places in downtown Srinagar.
A civilian, identified as Adil Ahmad, was killed after a forces’ vehicle allegedly ran over him during clashes in Safa Kadal. However, police said that the youth was killed in an accident.
Mobile internet services were suspended in Srinagar in wake of the gunfight.
