Srinagar, Apr 8: Yet another controversy has surrounded the ruling PDP-BJP coalition as a few organizations in Jammu have joined hands to press the government for handing over the rape and murder case of a Kathua nomad girl to CBI, seek deportation of Rohingyas and withdrawing the minutes of the meeting of the state Tribal Affairs Department.
The Jammu High Court Bar Association and many other social, political and trade bodies have called for a strike in Jammu on April 11to protest what it calls as injustice against the people of the Jammu region and the controversial decisions taken by the government.
A Kashmir watcher said, “It’s unfortunate that a few people in Jammu are not leaving any stone unturned to politicize the issues which can snowball into major controversies. The brutal rape and murder of an 8-year old Kathua nomad girl has shocked everyone. Despite Crime Branch nabbing the accused and investigations being at final stages a few people are trying their best to intimidate the government to handover the case to Central Bureau of Investigation.”
He said, “Deportation of Rohingyas and withdrawing the minutes of the meeting of state Tribal Affairs Department are being incorporated just to add to the confusion. The fact is that a few people are trying to defend the accused involved in the heinous Kathua rape and murder case.”
An analyst said that Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has already rejected the demand of the Bharatiya Janata Party to handover the Kathua rape and murder case to the CBI. She also made it clear that she had not passed any specific directions during the meeting of Tribal Affairs Department. “As far as the issue of Rohingyas is concerned it’s a matter of debate and the Government of India has already stated that it would take the final call over the issue. People who are beating their chests over discrimination of Jammu region should explain what they mean by discrimination. Is acting against rapists and murderers, discrimination?” the analyst asked.
A politician said that it’s unfortunate that despite BJP being a part of the government is pointing fingers at the Crime Branch probe. “It’s clear that BJP too is supporting the people who are playing politics over Kathua rape and murder case.”
Its in place to mention here that BJP’s state chief spokesperson Sunil Sethi said, “One of the members of the team investigating the Kathua case had been himself accused in the murder and rape cases of a Hindu boy and his sister.”
“Irfan Wani, then Incharge Karara PP, Thathri Police Station was arrested in 2007 on the charges of murder of a boy and rape of a girl during their illegal custody. How can a person of such a character be associated with the present investigation?” Sethi said.
He was however quick to add that Wani was subsequently acquitted of the charges by the court. “Still his being the member of the investigating team raises doubts over the fairness of the investigation,” Sethi said.
On the other hand Congress spokesperson Ravinder Sharma also said, “Impartial probe should be held in Kathua rape and murder case.”
An observer said that it looks like that every efforts is being made to communalize the situation in Jammu region. “Both Congress and BJP are playing into the hands of the communal elements and are wittingly or unwittingly trying to shield the accused involved in Kathua rape and murder case,” he added.
