Ex-BSP MLA staged Meerut stir at Mayawati’s behest: BJP

Meerut: The Uttar Pradesh Police has put a face on the worst violence perpetrated in western UP during the Bharat Bandh called by Dalit organisations on Monday – Yogesh Verma, a former Bahujan Samaj Party MLA whose wife recently won the mayoral election from Meerut for the party and who, the ruling BJP alleged, was acting on orders from BSP chief Mayawati.
Two youths, Ankur and Amresh, died in police firing in Meerut and Muzaffarnagar, an area that used to be a BSP stronghold with significant Dalit population but has lately been dominated by the BJP. The Meerut MP, BJP’s Rajendra Agrawal, blamed the BSP for igniting violence in western UP in an attempt to regain political ground. “Yogesh Verma, and his brother Pavan Verma openly moved around in Meerut on Monday with his armed supporters, leading the protests to create mayhem. Three pistols have been recovered from Verma and we have handed over video evidence to the police.
Verma was tasked by Mayawati to do the same,” Agrawal told ET in Meerut. Senior superintendent of police Manzil Saini said that Yogesh Verma was the “main conspirator” of the violence and that he would be booked under the National Security Act (NSA).
