Strict action will be taken against people spreading rumours on social media: SSP Ganderbal

Ganderbal, Mar 30: Asserting that strict action will be taken against people spreading rumours on social media sites, Jammu and Kashmir Police on Friday said that one person has been arrested for depicting a youth as militant and circulating his photograph on Whatsapp.
“On March 28, Farooq Ahmad Mir resident of Beehama approached police with complaint that photograph of his son namely Aqib Farooq Mir is being circulated on social media as a militant by fake name of Umar Shair Gojri alais Abu Zeeshan,” Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Ganderbal told reports during a press conference here on Friday.
He said investigation reveal that Aqib is a law abiding citizen and works as a shopkeeper in Beehama.
“During preliminary investigation, one person Manzoor Ahmad Ganie son of Muhammad Munawar Ganie resident of Masjid Pora Tulmulla who is rumour monger and an admin of WhatsApp groups “Shariyat Ya Shahadat” and “Fiza Telecom” was arrested,” he added.
He said police has registered a case against the accused, adding more arrests are expected of people indulging in rumour mongering to disturb peace and tranquility.
The SSP said that a monitoring cell has been constituted in Ganderbal which will overlook Facebook and WhatsApp. “The cell will trace people spreading rumours or sharing posts to discredit someone,” he said, adding strict action under the law will be taken against such persons.
