Harsh decision

Jammu and Kashmir government sacking a doctor for his critical Facebook post has evoked sharp reaction from all the quarters. The doctors in Jammu have threatened to go on an indefinite strike if the government doesn’t revoke the termination of the doctor.
National Conference working president Omar Abdullah lashed out at the J&K government for sacking the doctor for “pointing out the truth.” Since the day doctor has been terminated the J&K government has maintained silence. It was in December last year when government asked its employees to stay away from social networking sites and not to criticize the government.
Dr Amit Kumar was sacked by the government for asking a question to the minister. He had commented on Health Minister’s post. Dr Kumar had even submitted an unconditional apology despite that government did not take a lenient view and went ahead with his sacking.
When the government had passed the order asking its employees to stay away from social media it was assumed that they would follow the order in letter and spirit but it didn’t happen.
Apparently it looks like that government has established its writ by sacking Dr Gupta and he has become a scapegoat. Now the ball is in the court of the government and it should not allow the issue to snowball into a major controversy.
The Resident Doctors Association has given the government 48 hours deadline to revoke the order. If the government ignores the call given by the doctors it could lead to healthcare in Jammu getting paralyzed. The J&K government needs to show a big heart while dealing with this issue and give Dr Kumar another chance.
