Ganderbal, Mar 16: Sonamarg road is expected to be opened on 20 March. The Srinagar-Sonamarg road remains closed during the winter season from December to April on account of heavy snowfall. The highway authorities take around five months to clear the entire 434km stretch Srinagar-Leh highway of snow.
This year on account of low snowfall, majority of the snow has already been cleared from the highway and it will take another week to cleared remaining snow. The Border Roads Organisation has already cleared the stretch from Zojila pass of major obstacles.
The snow has been already cleared from the road at Zojila to Pani Matha and the process is on to clear the snow from the Srinagar-Leh highway.
A BRO official said if the weather remains better the Srinagar- Sonamarg road snow clearance process will soon touch the Zero point Zojila of Srinagar-Leh highway to facilitate the re-opening of the highway.
BRO official said that they are facing a tough situation at Pani Matha due to avalanches along the road,” they said.
Official sources added that Srinagar-Sonamarg road will be opened for vehicular movement on 20 March.
Project Beacon of the Border Road Organization is responsible for clearing the road up to zero point near Zojilla from Sonamarg, while the project Vijayak of the BRO clears the road from the Kargil side.
