Srinagar, Mar 9: Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti turning down the demand of the Bharatiya Janata Party ministers to handover the rape and murder case of an eight year old minor Kathua girl to Central Bureau of Investigation has put the Bharatiya Janata Party in a tight spot.
An analyst told Precious Kashmir that Chief Minister by putting her “foot down” has made it clear that no politics should be played over such humanitarian issues and no compromise would be made on the issue. “It’s a snub for BJP leaders who were questioning the probe being conducted by the Crime Branch,” he added.
The assertion of the Chief Minister that probe into the case is nearing its completion and challan would be presented within a few days is an important fact which cannot be ignored. “The Hindu Ekta Manch which is spearheading the protests in Kathua area to seek the transfer of case to the CBI has been alleging that Crime Branch is harassing the people. But the fact is that HEM is not bothered about people. It has realized that noose is being tightened over the policemen as four cops have been arrested in this connection so far,” the analyst said.
He said, “The arrested policemen are likely to spill more beans. It remains to be seen at whose behest the accused indulged in such a heinous crime despite them being assigned the job of protecting the people.”
A PDP leader said, “The day this case came to fore our party announced that investigations will be taken to their logical conclusion. Despite facing pressure from our coalition ally the government allowed the Crime Branch on carry on with the probe and collect all the evidences.”
He said, “The BJP leaders who met the Chief Minister were told in clear terms that there is no reason to handover the case to CBI and probe would continue.”
Referring to the recent statement of the Education Minister Altaf Bukhari that PDP would pull out from the coalition if the government fails to provide justice to the family of the minor Kathua girl, the PDP leader said, “BJP leaders should bear in mind that no government can ignore such crimes. Minor’s rape and murder was a crime against humanity and accused cannot be spared. It seems BJP leaders have realized that they were losing their credibility by somehow playing into the hands of a few elements supporting the accused.”
It may be recalled that the victim was abducted from near her house at Rasana village in Kathua district in first week of January and her mutilated body was recovered eight days after she went missing.
