Srinagar, Feb 27: Life was on Tuesday crippled due to strike in Tral, where a Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militant was killed in a grenade blast at a police station, where he was detained after his arrest in north Kashmir last month.
A magisterial inquiry has already been ordered into the incident.
Shops and business establishments remained closed in Tral and adjoining areas in south Kashmir district of Pulwama. Traffic was also off the roads though some private vehicles were seen plying on some routes. Additional security forces had been deployed to prevent any law and order problem. After the death of militant, clashes erupted and security forces had to burst teargas shells to disperse the demonstrators yesterday.
A Police Spokesperson said yesterday that at 1230 hrs, an HM militant, identified as Mushtaq Chopan, who was in custody of Police Station Tral, tried to escape from the police station, wearing a burqa. However, when he was near the main gate, someone from outside lobbed a grenade, as part of a planned conspiracy to divert the attention, so he could escape conveniently, he further said.
He said the grenade exploded inside the station, resulting in on the spot death of the militant and injury to Constable Mehrajuddin.
”The injured was rushed to a local hospital, from where he was referred to the Army hospital, whereas the body of the detenue was being taken for autopsy,” he added.
Meanwhile, he said a magisterial enquiry has been initiated into the incident. Chopan was apprehended by Sopore police last month, he added.
