Srinagar, Feb 18: Activists of Hindu Ekta Manch taking out a rally in favour of a Special Police Officer (SPO) accused of raping and murdering a minor nomad girl in Kathua has snowballed into major controversy.
It’s in place to mention here that activists of Hindu Ekta Manch took out a protest rally from Ghagwal to Hiranagar earlier this week in support of the accused and sort his release.
Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti while reacting to the development took to twitter to express her anger against the protest rally. “Appalled by the marches and protests in defence of the recently apprehended rapist in Kathua,” she tweeted.
The Chief Minister also said that she was horrified by the use of national flag in these demonstrations, saying “It was nothing more than desecration of the flag.”
She said that law will take its own course in the case. “The accused has been arrested & the law will follow its course,” she said.
A politician while talking to Precious Kashmir said, “It’s unfortunate that a few extremist elements are trying to communalize the situation by supporting the rapist and a murderer. This is unacceptable and cannot be tolerated.”
He said, “The rally has put the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in a tight spot. The BJP leaders are tightlipped over the issue as they have no explanation to offer. They know it very well that they have put their coalition partner Peoples Democratic Party in an awkward position.”
A PDP leader said, “We have conveyed our displeasure to the top BJP leaders and have asked them to ensure that extremist elements are reined in. The stand of our government and the party is clear that we want the law to take its course and guilty should be punished.”
On the other hand Opposition National Conference has taken the PDP-BJP coalition head on over the issue.
NC President Dr Farooq Abdullah said, “The PDP’s coalition partner (BJP) is hell bent on giving religious color to this horrific crime. It is shocking to see leaders from political parties joining a rally in which national flag was carried in support of the accused. It is an insult to the national flag when people come out in support of the rape and murder accused while waving the flag.”
It’s in place to mention here that advocate Vijay Kumar of Ekta Manch had led the rally. “The locals are demanding CBI investigation into the case.”
A group of people from minority community had alleged that they are being threatened by the locals and supporters of Ekta Manch ever since the accused were arrested. “We are feeling insecure here. They have threatened us that they will repeat 2008 if the accused are not released forthwith” they alleged. “ Ekta Manch is mobilizing people against the minority community. They have held several meetings in the area after the incident,” they said, alleging that the policemen were escorting Ekta Manch’s rally.
