Srinagar, Feb 16: The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has announced to increase seats in Engineering courses under the Prime Minister’s Special Scholarship Scheme (PMSSS) for the students of Jammu and Kashmir.
This information was given during a scholarship workshop, conducted by the AICTE, New Delhi for J&K students studying under the PMSSS at Aryans Group of Colleges, Rajpura, near Chandigarh, a Spokesman of the group said here on Friday.
Thousands of J&K students studying in around 80 colleges of Chandigarh, Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh under the PMSSS, participated in the workshop.
Member Secretary of AICTE Alok Prakash Mittal said PMSSS was started by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in which around 16000 students of J&K are getting benefits outside the state.
Considering the interest of J&K students towards Engineering, the AICTE has decided to increase the seats in Engineering course from this year. For 2018-19 session in PMSSS, the AICTE has allotted 2830 seats in Engineering, 2070 in General Degree programme and 100 in Medical and BDS Programme, Prof Mittal added.
AICTE Director Manpreet Singh Manna said the budget of around Rs 600 crore has been approved for four years under the PMSSS by the government, adding that around Rs 36 crore under the scheme from 2012-13 to 2017-18 have been released to the students & colleges through the Direct Benefit Credit (DBT) under the Public Financial Management System (PFMS).
To assist the students, a user-friendly portal has been developed to ensure the redressal of grievances of the students within seven days. A dedicated helpline number has also been started for the purpose.
Nodal officer of PMSSS Ajeet Angral said the special scholarship scheme for the students of Jammu and Kashmir to pursue higher education outside the state has received tremendous response this year because of such awareness workshops, being conducted by the AICTE from time to time.
Dr R K Soni RO, NWRO, AICTE, Chandigarh while speaking on the occasion said that it is an honour for him that the North West Region of the Country have the majority of J&K students who are studying under this scheme in his jurisdiction.
Over 4000-5000 students of J&K are studying in various colleges of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh under PMSSS. Shivali gave a complete demonstration of PMSSS portal and grievances portal.
Chairman of Aryans Group Dr Anshu Kataria said that over 1600 students from various parts of J&K are studying in Aryans.
