Police foil UN march called by JRL

Srinagar, Feb 11: Police on Sunday foiled a proposed UN march of separatists on the hanging anniversary of Maqbool Bhat to its headquarters in the region at Sonwar in Srinagar.
Scores of leaders of the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) – an amalgam of separatist outfits and headed by Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik – took out a march from Srinagar to submit a memorandum at the UN office to demand mortal remains of Maqbool Bhat and Afzal Guru.
However, a contingent of police stopped them and prevented their march to the UN office by detaining several leaders.
Meanwhile, Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq were put under house arrest, while Yasin Malik has been lodged in Central Jail to prevent them from leading any protest rallies.
Earlier, authorities deployed contingents of paramilitary forces to enforce restrictions in the region and thwart any attempts of protests.
JRL had called for UN march to present a memorandum regarding the return of mortal remains of Bhat and Guru who were hanged and buried in Tihar jail.
