Night temperature remains below freezing point in Kashmir

 

Srinagar, Feb 5: People continued to enjoy summer-like weather due to sunshine though the night temperature remained several degrees below freezing point owing to dry conditions in Kashmir, where rain and snow is predicted from Friday.
However, chilly weather conditions continued in the border town of Kargil, which was the coldest place in the region at minus 16 degree, followed by Leh, where the mercury settled at minus 8.7 degree.
A Met department spokesperson said that weather will remain dry during the next four days in the valley, which could result in further dip in the night temperature.
But, he said a fresh Western Disturbance (WD), which originated from Arabian Sea, is expected to hit the region on Friday. “Under the influence of this WD, rain and snow could occur in the valley,” he added.
The night temperature at Kargil, a border town in Srinagar-Leh National Highway, which remained closed since December last year due to accumulation of snow and slipper road condition, dipped and settled at minus 16 degree, against minus 15.5 degree recorded on Sunday. However, the neighbouring town of Leh witnessed an improvement of 4 degree from Sunday and settled at minus 8.7 degree.
He said skies will be mainly clear during the next 24 hours in Leh, where maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 5 degree and minus 12 degree, respectively.
The summer capital, Srinagar witnessed slight improvement in the night temperature though it still settled about 3 degree below normal. Against minus 3.9 degree recorded on Sunday, the night temperature recorded in Srinagar was minus 3.3 degree. But, people are enjoying summer-like weather from the last about three days due to sunshine. The maximum temperature in Srinagar on Sunday was 5 degree above normal.
“Skies will be mainly clear during the next 24 hours in Srinagar, where maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 15 degree and minus 4 degree, respectively,” he added.
Gulmarg, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir, witnessed improvement in the night temperature, which surged and settled at minus 7.5 degree, against minus 9 degree recorded on Sunday. The ski resort was the coldest place in the valley though the night temperature was slightly above normal.
The night temperature at world famous health resort of Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir, dipped and settled at minus 6.1 degree, against minus 5.8 degree. The night temperature in the health resort was normal.
The mercury at Qazigund, gateway to the valley, Kupwara in north Kashmir and tourist resort of Kokernag dipped and settled at minus 4.2 degree, minus 4.6 degree and minus 1.4 degree, respectively.
