Miscreants beating up two Kashmir students in Haryana has once again evoked concern in the state and has left the parents of the students studying in other states worried.
It’s not for the first time that Kashmiri students have been manhandled by the goons outside the state. It has become a routine now.
It’s strange that Haryana Police tried to downplay the issue and did not register a FIR in the beginning itself. The FIR was registered only after the case came into the limelight.
It seems other states have even ignored the direction of the Union Home Minister Rajanath Singh to take care of Kashmiri students and to ensure that they are not harassed or humiliated. But his directions have fallen flat as nothing has changed on the ground.
Its unfortunate that Kashmiri students who are pursuing their careers in other states are living under constant fear and threat and are being targeted without any reason.
Jammu and Kashmir Police and senior leaders, including the Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti took up the matter with Harayana government and expressed displeasure over assault on two students. They urged the Haryana CM to pass necessary instructions to the administration and police in order to ensure safety of all the students. There are around 82 students from Kashmir in the University and they are felling unsafe. Victims punctured the Haryana police version that a scuffle took place between them and the goons. They made it clear that they were thrashed mercilessly by a group of 15 persons without any reason.
The Jammu and Kashmir government should ensure that students who are studying in other states don’t face a similar situation next time. The J&K government needs to take up the issue of the security of the students with the governments of the states where they are studying and see to it that such incidents are not repeated again.
