Threats loom large

Director General of Police S P Vaid has made it clear that Jammu and Kashmir Police won’t be able to provide security to all the candidates who would contest the forthcoming Panchayat polls.
The audio clip of the Hizb commander Riyaz Naikoo going viral on social media has added to the worries of the security agencies. In the audio clip Naikoo is heard asking his cadres to pour acid into the eyes of the contestants and blind them. He has asked his cadre not to kill the contestants but to blind them.
This is a serious issue. Even the DGP has said that it’s a serious issue and J&K Police and other security agencies cannot take this threat lightly.
With just a month left for Panchayat polls, the electioneering is yet to commence in the rural areas as not many people have come forward to jump into the fray. Even the grass root workers of the mainstream political parties fear that they may end up in trouble and they are feeling the heat.
As the days are passing and the date for Panchayat polls is coming near the political parties are formulating a strategy to deal with the emerging situation. All the mainstream parties especially National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party know it very well that they cannot afford to take a chance and would have to jump into the fray. The battle lines have been drawn and the political parties have no other option other than to field the candidates and hope for the best.
Now it depends upon the security agencies to ensure that candidates are not threatened or intimidated. They have a tough challenge on hands.
