New Delhi, Dec 20: Militancy incidents in Jammu and Kashmir have risen but there has been a let up in insurgency and incidents related to left wing extremism during the last three years, the Rajya Sabha was informed Wednesday.
As many as 606 civilians and 212 security personnel were killed in the LWE related violence during 2014 to 2016, and during the same period, 60 civilians and 168 jawans lost their lives in Jammu and Kashmir, Minster of State for Home Affairs Hansram Gangaram Ahir told the House in a written reply today.
Except for a rise in militancy incidents in Jammu and Kashmir, insurgency incidents in North Eastern region and left wing extremism had registered considerable slump in successive years since 2014, he said.
He said the overall internal security situation in the country had improved .
Ahir said that because of continuous and unrelenting efforts of the Centre and the state governments, such incidents have been checked.
The minister said the Centre was supplementing the efforts of the state governments to deal with such outfits in a coordinated matter. These include sharing of intelligence, financial assistance for strengthening of the state police force, sanctioning of India Reserve Battalions and deployment of Para- military forces for carrying out intensive counter insurgency operations.
