Gulmarg, other heights receive fresh snowfall, night temp improves

 

Srinagar, Dec 20: World famous ski resort of Gulmarg and other upper reaches in Kashmir valley received fresh snowfall while plains, including summer capital, Srinagar, experience rain overnight.
Meanwhile, night temperature witnessed major improvement as mercury surged and settled above sub-zero at majority of the place in the valley.
A Met department spokesperson said that a fresh Western Disturbance (WD), originated in Arabian Sea, is active in the region and could result in very light rain and snow at few places in the state during the next 24 hours.
However, he said weather will remain dry from Friday onwards in Kashmir, where 40-day-long “Chilai-Kalan”, severest period of the winter will commence from Thursday mid-night.
Even though Leh in Ladakh region witnessed improvement of about 3 degree from Tuesday, it was still the coldest place in the region at minus 10.5 degree.
He said there is possibility of very light snow during the next 24 hours in Leh, where maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 2 degree and minus 10 degree, respectively.
Gulmarg, where ski slopes are already under several feet of snow, received fresh snowfall since late last night. The ski resort was the only place in the state where mercury dipped and settled at minus 5.2 degree, against minus 4.6 degree recorded on Tuesday. The ski resort was the coldest place in the valley. “It was still snowing intermittently in Gulmarg. But despite sub-zero temperature, tourists, both national and foreigners, are enjoying on the ski slopes,” a hotelier said.
He said the upper heights, including Kongdori, Khilanmarg and Affarwat, the highest skiing point, connected through Cable Car, received light to moderate snowfall since late last night.
The upper reaches in north Kashmir, including areas near the Line of Control (LoC), also received fresh snowfall since late last night.
After witnessed an improvement of about 6 degree from Tuesday in the night temperature, people woke up to a cloudy and cold Wednesday morning in the summer capital, Srinagar, which received rain overnight. Against minus 3.6 degree recorded on Tuesday, the night temperature at Srinagar was 2.3 degree, which is over 3 degree above normal. The maximum temperature on Tuesday in the summer capital was a degree below normal.
The spokesperson said there is possibility of very light snow during the next 24 hours in Srinagar, where maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 6 degree and 1 degree, respectively.
World famous health resort of Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir, received mixed snow and rain since early this morning. The night temperature at the health resort, which is covered under few feet of snow, witnessed an improvement of about 7 degree from Tuesday and settled at minus 0.1 degree, which is 3 degree above normal.
The holy cave shrine and its periphery, Sheshnag, Mahaguns, Pisso top and Panjterni received fresh snowfall.
The mercury at Qazigund, gateway to the valley, Kupwara in north Kashmir and tourist resort of Kokernag also witnessed an improvement and settled at 0.8 degree, 1.3 degree and 1 degree, respectively.
