Day 9: MGNREGA staff continues strike, protests

Srinagar, Dec 19: The staff engaged under MGNREGA continued with strike and protests for ninth consecutive day on Monday in demand for regularization of all type of workers.
Reports said that hundreds of protesters took out rally from at exhibition ground near Press Club here and tried to march towards civil secretariat. But they were stopped by police.
The staff under the banner of All J&K MGNREGA Employees Association assembled at Exhibition Ground and then started protest demonstration. The workers from across the state joined the protest program.
President and vice president of the association, Jan Mohammed and Sandeep Kalotra and others addressed the gathering and said that despite assurance by the RDD Minister to frame a definite policy for the regularization of MGNREGA workers, nothing has been done so far.
They said that these workers including GRS, Technical Assistants, MIS Operators are being exploited by the Government and are being provided just peanuts as salary. “We will continue with protest until for genuine demands are not met,” they said. Besides framing of job policy, they demand salary at par with SSA.
“This is a ‘do and die’ agitation in favour of legitimate demands and we will continue it till our genuine demands are not fulfilled,” they said. (GNS)
