Srinagar, Dec 15: Nearly dozen shops were gutted in a nocturnal blaze at Gojwara chowk in Downtown Srinagar.
Reports said that the fire erupted in one of the shops around 2am and engulfed the adjacent shops in a building of the local Auqaf Committee.
Eleven shops located in the first floor of the two-storey building suffered extensive damages while a dozen others in the ground floor also suffered damages due to water, a spokesman of the Fire and Emergency Services said.
He said the cause of fire was under police investigation, adding that property worth crores of rupees was destroyed in the fire.
The spokesman praised the locals for helping the firemen to prevent fire from spreading to adjacent houses.
“Had not the locals extended their help, the losses would have been much higher,” he said.
He said the fire station Rainawari received the distress call and was the first station to reach the spot and started fighting the flames. Nine other fire stations joined later in fighting the leaping flames.
