Srinagar, Dec 15: Ice chill has gripped the entire Kashmir valley as the mercury during the night further plunged and settled several degrees below freezing point while the maximum temperature also remained below normal.
World famous ski resort of Gulmarg, where ski slopes are under several feet snow, recorded the coldest night of the season at minus 10 degree.
A Met department spokesperson said that light snow or rain could occur at isolated placed during the next 24 hours in the state. However, he said from Saturday onwards weather will remain dry, which could result in further dip in the temperature.
The border town of Kargil was the coldest place in the region after the mercury dipped about 2 degree from Thursday and settled at minus 10.2 degree.
However, the night temperature at Leh in Ladakh region witnessed an improvement of about 3 degree from Thursday and settled at minus 5.7 degree due to overcast conditions. The maximum temperature on Thursday at Leh was minus 3.9 degree.
He said skies will be partly cloudy during the next 24 hours in Leh, where maximum and minimum temperatures will be around minus 3 degree and minus 10 degree, respectively.
Gulmarg, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir, witnessed a marginal dip in the mercury, which settled at minus 10 degree, recording the coldest night recorded so far this season. The night temperature in the ski resort was 6 degree below normal though that didn’t deter the tourists, both national and foreign, to enjoy their stay at Gulmarg.
“It was a dream come true visit for me. This is the first time that I saw an actual snowfall. It is just amazing… there are no words to describe the beauty of Gulmarg during a snowfall. We only had to stay for a day in Gulmarg, but we extended our stay and it was worth it,” Charu Thakur, a tourist from Delhi, said.
The summer capital, Srinagar, witnessed some improvement in the night temperature due to overcast conditions. Against minus 1.5 degree recorded on Thursday, the night temperature in the summer capital was minus 0.1 degree, which is about a degree above normal. But, the maximum temperature recorded in Srinagar on Thursday was 4 degree below normal.
The spokesperson said skies will be partly cloudy during the next 24 hours in Srinagar, where maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 7 degree and 0 degree, respectively.
The mercury at world famous health resort of Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir, further dipped and settled at minus 7.1 degree, against minus 6.5 degree recorded on Thursday. The night temperature at Pahalgam was 4 degree below normal.
Qazigund, gateway to the valley, tourist resort of Kokernag also witnessed a dip in the night temperature as mercury plunged and settled at minus 1.8 degree and minus 1.1 degree, respectively.
