People of J&K worst sufferers of India-Pak confrontation: Bhat


New Delhi, Dec 8: Senior PDP leader Nizamuddin Bhat has said that friendship and understanding between India and Pakistan is an imperative for resolution of mutual issues and success of peace process in the region.

Speaking at a seminar organised at India International Centre, New Delhi by an NGO headed by prominent peace worker O.P Shah, Bhat said people of Jammu and Kashmir have been worst sufferers of Indo- Pak confrontation and the two countries cannot live in perpetual uncertainty and enemosity.

He sought the support of the participants from the two countries including politicians, journalists and peace workers from Kashmir to build an opinion in support of peace moves and building of a platform for engagement aimed at reconciliation and resolution.

Bhat said in this process it is necessary that any initiatives taken at local levels are allowed to grow into sustainable exercise contributing to long- term understanding and civil action relationships.

Bhat said once that happens it will be easier for governments of India and Pakistan to reach a consensus on issues.

Bhat said two countries have squandered opportunities at the peril of the people of the region. “If they learn from mistakes they can emerge as a strong block and contribute to global peace and economy, besides giving their people a space to grow in free atmosphere,” he said

Bhat said while scanner sections on both sides have to play a role in mitigating miseries and easing of tensions, onus is on two Governments to get together.

The participants in the seminar included former foreign minister of Pakistan Kasouri, Pakistan High Commissioner Suhail Mehmood, Mani Shankar Aiyar, Kapil Kak, Professor Saifuddin Soz, Kulkarni, prominent journalist Shujaat Bukhari, Asok Bhan, Mohmmad Yousuf Tarigami and Dr. Riyaz Punjabi, besides many other well known journalists and peace activists.

Kasouri while acknowledging that dialogue is must even as tensions or terrorism continues.

He observed that General Musharaf’s four-point formula for resolution of Kashmir dispute offered hope.

He said the formula gets appreciation from peace lovers and what he called ” deep state.”

Kasouri’s views were appreciated at the gathering by galaxy of speakers. (KNS)
