Srinagar, Dec 6: Police foiled an attempt by Shiv Sena activists to hoist the national flag at Lal Chowk in the summer capital Srinagar early on Wednesday morning. Nine Shiv Sena activists were arrested by the police.
The attempt to hoist the tricolour comes days after National Conference (NC) president and MP from Srinagar Farooq Abdullah had dared the centre to hoist the national flag at Lal Chowk before talking about unfurling it in Pakistan administered Kashmir (PaK).
Official sources said that nine Shiv Sena activists tried to hoist the national flag at Lal Chowk early in the morning, when the business establishments were still closed and there was hardly anyone on the road.
However, they said security forces deployed in the area swung into action and stopped the activists from hoisting the tricolor. All the nine members were later taken into preventive custody and lodged in a local police station.
This is not the first time that attempts were made to hoist the national flag at Lal Chowk.
Last year on January 26, two Shiv Sena activists were arrested after their attempt to hoist the tricolour at Lal Chowk was foiled.
Meanwhile, hitting at Dr Abdullah, the Shiv Sena activists, before being arrested, said that if he wants to come back to power he should focus on issues like employment and development. “Dr Abdullah should not speak the language of separatists. It doesn’t suite him. He should focus on issues of providing employment to the youth of the valley and development,” they said.
