Who Cares?

The shocking revelation that majority of the personnel of the State Disaster Response Force are working as orderlies and guards at the residences of politicians and police officials has put the question mark over disaster preparedness of Jammu and Kashmir government.
The SDRF personnel who are considered to be the first line of defence when any disaster strikes need to be trained and well equipped but in Jammu and Kashmir they are working as domestic helps and guards. It’s pathetic!
When Kashmir witnessed the worst floods of the century in 2014, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which was in opposition at that point of time raised hue and cry over the failure of the then National Conference-Congress regime and had promised people that when it comes into power it would set up a special disaster wing to tackle the natural calamities.
More than two and a half years have passed since the day PDP-BJP took over the reins of the state. It’s really unfortunate that till date the present regime has not done anything to prepare itself for the disaster management.
Many flood victims, who were promised compensation, after the 2014 floods are yet to receive the compensation which was promised to them. They are still waiting for the promised relief despite Government of India sanctioning the relief log ago.
The PDP-BJP government needs to wake up from the deep slumber and act. Rather than hiding behind the excuses. It needs to restructure the SDRF and should see to it that people who were promised monetary relief get it without any delay. Mere lip service is not enough. The present regime has to practically take steps to mitigate the sufferings of people.
