Srinagar airport ill equipped

Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti seeking direct flights to Southeast Asian Nations from Srinagar is a good idea but the fact of the matter Srinagar airport is not equipped to host the international flights in absence of the night landing facilities at the airport.
The Srinagar airport has remained in news for its inability to allow the landing of flights during night as the lighting system available with the airport is not upto the mark.
Regimes which have come into power in Jammu and Kashmir have tried their best to get the Srinagar airport equipped but their efforts have not yielded desired results.
Despite Srinagar airport being an international airport, the flights from other countries don’t land here due to technical difficulties. The present regime, which claims to be very close to New Delhi, needs to prevail upon the people sitting in the national capital to ensure that something is done to make the Srinagar International Airport fully functional. If it’s done it would boast the tourism as Srinagar would become the easily accessible destination and tourists won’t have to struggle to reach Kashmir.
The operation of flights from and to cities like Kaula-Lumpur, Jakarta, Bangkok, Singapore and other cities in the region would have a positive impact on the local tourism industry and bolster the state’s economy.
No one can deny the fact that Kashmir becomes inaccessible in winter months for days together due to the closure of the Srinagar-Jammu highway. During those days the airfares skyrocket and people have to pay through their nose. This can be taken care off if the Srinagar International airport is made fully functional and the steps are taken to address the technical issues. If these issues are addressed Srinagar aerodrome can be thrown open for the flights 24×7 and the idea to have direct flights to ASEAN region could become a reality.
