Police keen to make Baramulla drug free district

Over 100 drug peddlers, suppliers booked under PSA

Baramulla, Nov 16: Police in north Kashmir have launched a massive drive against drug peddlers and suppliers and have arrested scores of them in different parts of Baramulla district including Tangmarg, Pattan, Uri, Kreeri, Boniyar, Sheeri and main town Baramulla.
Baramulla district police chief, Mir Imtiyaz Hussain said that police is keen make district Baramulla a drug free state.
“The unfortunate part is that drugs are being pumped into Valley from Pakistan. Recently we seized brown sugar worth Rs 300 crore at Salamabad Uri. A truck driver from Muzaffarabad, Muhammad Yousuf has been arrested in this regard and a formal FIR vide number 54/17 under section 29 NDPS stands registered against him,” SSP Baramulla said.
Mir Imtiyaz Hussain said that over a hundred drug peddlers and suppliers have been arrested and booked under Public Safety Act. “To stop drug supply from other part of Kashmir is a big challenge that police have been facing. We are trying our best and have succeeded to a great extent,” he said adding that drug peddlers are the source of violence and stone-pelting incidents in Kashmir.
“We have also started drug de-addiction centres at various parts of the district. So many youth have got rid of this menace due to counseling at drug de-addiction centres,” he said. (CNS)
