Srinagar: The ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reportedly conveyed to the Bharatiya Janata Party led NDA government at the Center that for it interests of Kashmir and Kashmiris are paramount for the party.
“The ruling party (PDP) is leaving no opportunity to make it clear to New Delhi that its constituency is Kashmir and cannot compromise with its interests. When it came to defending the Article 35-A in the Supreme Court the PDP did not bother about the reaction of BJP and went ahead with the defence by hiring a battery of top lawyers and keeping the contents of the affidavit a secret,” sources told Precious Kashmir.
They said, “Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has made it clear to the BJP high command in New Delhi that she cannot compromise with the interests of Kashmiris and Kashmir and she should be given a free hand to deal with the situation. The aggressive posture of the Chief Minister has cut the BJP ministers to their size. They are trying their best to stay away from Kashmir affairs.”
An insider revealed that during her meetings with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh the Chief Minister has always reiterated that PDP has taken a huge ‘political’ risk in forging an alliance with the BJP but the same has not been reciprocated by the later. “New Delhi has to take some bold initiatives to break the impasse,” Chief Minister is understood to have conveyed to the top BJP leaders in New Delhi.
Sources said that Chief Minister has expressed New Delhi’s concern over the Kashmir policy and wants Center to change it. “BJP cannot keep on treating J&K like other states. It’s a special state with a special status. When PDP entered into an alliance with BJP the party was assured that PM Modi would carry forward the initiative of the former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. But the promise has not been fulfilled till date. Appointing an interlocutor was an outcome of the pressure exerted by the Chief Minister on New Delhi,” sources claimed.
An insider revealed that Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti putting her foot down has made New Delhi realize that it cannot take PDP for granted nor can Delhi dictate terms to PDP. “New Delhi has understood that PDP is not like other parties which can be threatened for the sake of power. Chief Minister has made it clear that for PDP power comes later, Kashmir and Kashmiris come first. Fear of losing an alliance partner in Jammu and Kashmir is making BJP think twice and the saffron party has realized that PDP means business,” he added.
